Honoring the Men in Our Lives

June is the month that gives honor to the men in our lives, our fathers, husbands and sons.  More and more articles are being written concerning herbal healing for men and there are numerous publications about prostate health.  It’s not one of the largest organs in the male body but it can cause some big problems if it becomes enflamed or enlarged.

Prostatitis is the inflammation or infection of the prostate gland.  If left untreated it can also develop into a bladder infection.  Symptoms of prostate problems are:  painful urination, difficulty in emptying the bladder completely, having to get up frequently during the night to urinate when you would normally sleep through the night.  Sometimes there can be pain when you are sitting upright, fever, chills or blood in the urine.  If you think you are having prostate pain, please get it checked immediately by your doctor so that cancer can be ruled out or detected as soon as possible.  Don’t wait for the pain to go away by itself; chances are it won’t.  If it turns out to be inflammation then you can make your choice for treatment, either alternative or pharmaceutical.  If it turns out to be cancer the earlier you find it, the better your chances are of getting it under control.  Many times the doctor will advise a management program for you including some life style modifications of your diet, exercise or supplements as well as medication that can help to inhibit the cancers growth.

There are some simple things that you can do to prevent prostate problems like:  sitting on a hard chair instead of a cushioned one, avoid sitting for long periods of time, if you sit behind a desk all day or if you drive for a living, take frequent breaks.  You should also empty your bladder often. (You can do this on your breaks) A full bladder over time can cause the prostate to become enlarged.

Cutting back on beer and alcohol can help because both of these can increase the amount of prolactin.  Prolactin controls the amount of testosterone within the prostate, if not properly balanced there can be an over production of prostate cells which can cause an enlargement.

Drinking more water will help to flush out the bladder removing debris and possible infectious bacteria’s.  Adding more zinc containing foods or herbs to your diet like pumpkin seeds, flax seed, sage, skullcap, nettle, chickweed, kelp, lima beans, turkey, mushrooms or seafood.  These can help reduce the size of the prostate because zinc slows down the production of prolactin; which prevents enlargement of the prostate and increases the production of testosterone.  Adding more foods with carotenoids can also cut the risk of prostate cancer.  Carotenoids are high in antioxidants and anti-cancer agents; they help to counteract stress and are important for the male reproductive organs and for the repair of the body’s tissue.  Carotenoids can be found in foods like carrots, yams, pumpkin, squash, spinach, tomatoes, cantaloupe and apricots.

There are more herbs that aid in preventing prostate inflammation such as saw palmetto, red raspberry, Damiana, nettle, dandelion, corn silk, Echinacea, parsley root and red clover.  Saw palmetto is specific for the prostate.  It can help to reduce swelling, pain and discharge.  It is also used to strengthen the muscles of the urinary system especially the bladder muscles, this allows for an easier flow of urine.  Chickweed and dandelion both act as diuretics helping to prevent the build up of infectious materials in the urine.  They are loaded with vitamins and minerals therefore rejuvenating the whole body enabling it to heal quicker.  Red clover helps to restore the body by cleansing the blood removing congestion.  Cleansing the blood can also be done with gravel root or hydrangea root.  A formula that helps to tone, strengthen and nourish all of the male reproductive organs, helps to cleanse the urinary system removing obstructions and reduces inflammations would contain these herbs.  Others can be added for a more specific blend. (See recipe)  A good herbal book written for men’s health is “The Male Herbal Healthcare for Men and Boys” by James Green.

Recipes:

Prostate Tincture
5 parts saw palmetto
1 part red clover blossom
1 part dandelion
1 part Astragalus
1 part Siberian ginseng

To make tincture, place the herbs in a jar along with a menstruum of alcohol, vinegar or glycerin.  It should steep for at least 2 weeks.  After 2 weeks the herbs are strained off and the liquid is put in a dark bottle.

Prostate Tea
1 part corn silk
1 part marshmallow
3 parts damiana
1 part horsetail

At the Herb Corner we carry a Male Blend Tea containing:  damiana, nettle, gotu kola, comfrey, cinnamon, raspberry leaf, spearmint, peppermint, orange peel, ginger and stevia.  I encourage you to read more about these herbs and stop by for a bit of tea.
